Pre–production is the phase of further developing ideas and planning prior to the process of production. In an animation since it is the period before the animation process starts. In an animation since it is the period before any real animating takes place.
It is imperative to have a story and or concept ready before moving forward with an animation. Having an idea for the scenery, set and characters will save the project time and money; for every time you make a change in the midst of production, that put time constraint and financial strain on the project.
Characters are the main instrument that drives the story (plot), whether it is an advertisement, short film, explainer video or a music video. The character(s) is what connects the audience to the visuals. Having a good define character(s) that are relatable you than have established a stronger bond.
When it comes to animation, the simpler the design the better especially when a budget is involved; overcomplicating a design take away from the message and main focus of the story. Creativity triumphs over everything, it is better to focus on elegance than overcomplicated concepts.
A storyboard and animatic is a graphic organizer in the form of illustrations or images displayed in sequence for the purpose of pre-visualizing a motion picture, animation, motion graphic. When you create a storyboard, you create a visual map of your project. This can help you shape the vision and flow of your project.
Storyboards are the first step to visualize the animation, at this preliminary stage ideas are formed; the next stage is an animatic which loosely animates the storyboard, these two first stages help refine the process and save both time and money.
